I've played WBC II a'lot, but i recently picked this up. I always wanted to try humans, but then i discovered there was 2 human races (:OOO). So i went on and picked Knights because they have that cavalry, and they looked mostly like Humans from WBC II. Anyway with a strong merchant hero, you can quickly mass Knight Champions in Stage 2 Keep, and rush the opponent. Their 50% physical damage resistance really helps, as most of the early game contains melee damage (Against fire, their pretty much dead). Very strong ground-based units, but lacks ranged units (Squire is so bad). Anti-air is lacking too, as cavalry can't really attack air, so you have to support with Pegasus in case of Dragons, or Daemons.

Another race i like is Orcs, but they seem to fall short in the late game, which is why you have to rely on early rushing (Cheap infantry and cavalry). Against Daemons you'r pretty much doomed. They don't have any doomknight-like units, as ogres and giants are too slow, and they seem to die really fast.

Nah, you got the Orcs wrong. They rely on massing ogres and snipers, with shamans. In 1.03 wolfriders are mine raiders. You use them to raid mines and get resources off them. Ogres are a little slow but in big groups they wreak havoc.

As for Human races, they fall a little on the weak side in 1.03. I don't like them.

Daemons are a good race and are good all around.

I mainly play campaign, so i don't know much about strategy, but it just seems that ogres is too slow, and clunky.

As for Knights, when you have Crusade full upgraded, you've got an extremely durable army, because they will pretty much level up from 1 kill, and that will replenish their health. They are extremely resource-sucking tho, needing gold for everything, hence the merchant hero.

Yes but they are pretty susceptible to aerial attacks.

Exactly, and that is why you support with Pegasus, and those flying swords (forgot the name). Even if they aren't the best race, their still pretty much my favorite at the moment.

If your gonna run merchant I personally like The Swarm the most as with a fully upgraded Hive you can push out Scorpion Priests crazy fast. As for my favorite race I'd probably pick Demon but mostly for flavor as opposed to style.

You don't need to! Just make about 30 and upgrade your mana, and spam fire elementals!

I read somewhere Archons are very interesting because they are powerful.

They are flyers, so maybe you can use them to defend against others flyers ?

My favorite race is the Dark Elves.

A lot of people say you cannot send workers in mines before the 3rd level, or without an invocator/necromancer hero.

This is wrong, since WBC1 we can start the game with sorcerers and use them to summon zombies.
I'm sure this is not a trick, the original developpers really wanted to make the Dark Elves able to send workers in mines and they adapted the gameplay with this idea.

Thanks to this possibility of sending zombies in mines since the beginning, the main use of slave hordes at level 3 is not to upgrade wages, Dark Elves sacrify them in order to summon deamons.

Why would you summon daemons? Their not really that powerful. (We are talking about the winged red ones, with the whip, right?) And you're not even 100% certain that you would get a daemon. I might be wrong here, as i don't play Dark Elves. They do have some pretty weak troops tho, so perhaps daemons do have their uses.

I'm thinking of getting back into the game. I've been playing a lot of RPGs and TBS (mostly Dominions 3). When I was playing, my favorite race was the Empire. I usually when Sage or Archmage with them, but I might try a game as something else. Any suggestions?

Maybe, but not until after I've got a bit of the campaign under my belt again. I'm not sure what the hell I'm doing, and there are all the changes to mod to consider. Is there a list of the changes to hero skills and race skills anywhere with the latest mod?

Do you play with mods? Cuz i don't Smile. If by mods you mean patches, then i play with the latest official patch. Please take note that we ALWAYS play with temporary heroes, to avoid those level 100+ warrior killing machines, so playing campaign to gain EXP is not helpful.

Anyway, have a nice day Smile

My favourite race would be the Undead (and Minotaur in close second).

Something about their unique playstyle appeals to me, even if my main strategy is just to amass Doom Knights and liches and go to town (with perhaps some skeletons on horseback to draw tower-fire). I guess that I get a satisfaction with powering up each of my skeletons into bone crushing death machines.

Also the wraiths/shadows are interesting with their XP draining. Send a group to deal with a hero and you can end up with an instantly top level unit which I have always found amusing.

In general the Undead seem to be able to hold their own in early, mid and late combat, with decent ground units and good anti-air in late game at least. I also tend to make my heroes Undead, but this is mostly because I really am not able to decide what race and class to pick so I just pick the most appealing (Undead or Minotaur) and close my eyes to pick the class.

I've never played WBC3 online so I know little about tactics, so excuse me if it looks like I have no idea what I'm talking about, just stating my feelings.

I feel undead is one of the most powerful races in the game, however their also one of the hardest to play. Not only that, but you need a mobile hero, so you can resource hunt fast, without getting killed. Doom Knights with Liches can take anything down tho. I feel like Orcs (I might be wrong) can counter them pretty badly. I also personally think that Undead is one of the worst early-game.

I'd go with the Swarm.

They're unique and annoying at the same time. You can take over the map with scorpions, force them to turtle and raze their mines with scarabs, then draining what's left of their mines.
Either that or mass on fire ellies. But then, no matter what I do, Demons pretty much counter my armies.

I also like the Orcs. You can pretty much scout with Goblins, and mass Ogres. You can have Orcs tank towers if you wish. The Wolf Riders, Goblin Chiefs, Gobshooters and Trolls are pretty useless in vanilla, they do nothing. Goblin Shamans are good Ranged support... Too good. I'm thinking about nerfing the damage of most ranged spellcasters so they no longer replace ranged units. I try to make all units have a role, so you can't mass 1 unit and win the game.

The Daemons are great, if not the best race in the game. They have good economy and little resource competition for troops, but their Daemons and Succubi are great air troops and can cause trouble to a lot of the races, especially those who have poor air support such as Swarm and Undead.

I really enjoy the Ssrathi in my mod. They are more balanced now. They're chameleons aren't the Jack-of-all-Trades units, and all the troops do something now. The lizard riders are their anti-missile, and their chameleons, not being their main builder units or mine fillers, can serve as invisibility assassins, while still being able to invisi-build. They can now summon Fairy Dragons to scout the map and stop conversions, which is pretty useful.

I've never experienced significant trouble with orcs myself, I usually pester them with small groups of units so that they can't amass an army too easily. I manage alright early game since I can just spam summon skeletons with my hero and have a nice little wall of bones to stop the enemy from rushing my base.

I don't know much about match-ups yet, however i thought Orcs because their good early rushers. They also get ogres, trolls and giants later who have crushing damage, which i believe undead is weak against. Also undead players like to build gravestones, which are easily destroyable. Keep in mind that Orcs get 100 stone everytime they destroy an enemy building.

Well actually Orcs are pretty much countering Undead.

Their early infantry are cheap, and pretty though. They are weak to piercing early on, which Undead don't have at all. Ogres make great counter to Liches and Undead resurrection with crushingd amage and fire resistance

Yes orcs are a very powerful race, hard to use as a beginner because of the impossibility to repair buildings and very huge need of stone, but I think they are deadly when mastered by an orc specialist.

And a lot of player (as me...) forget sometimes to be carful when playing against orcs : unexpected group of shamans with full mana can need only 30 seconds to kill an army and a base with lightning bashing.

This is 4% per unit, so if you buy two slave hordes you have 20 units. The game let you select all them in order to get an adding-chance effect : you sacrify all them once, with 80% chance. And you reaise the skeletons with a lich. (Lich from retinue or summoned if you are a necromancer)

So you have a deamon with a skeleton group instantly, useful for quick defense support, and kill ennemy scout towers.
Of course it makes more sense with the official 1.03 version, because summoned Skeletons and Lichs are permanents.

However yes, I'm definitely not a super player who always win, so my strategies may not be the best. Wink
But one important thing to keep in mind : I never play with heroes who have a level above 20, I find the game more interessant when heroes are not Super Gods. So my strategies are not applied with level 60 super Summoners who can raise a deamon army since the begginging of a battle. This is why the official version is enough for me, there is less things to balance... I'm pretty sure it is totally useless to play the original game with high-level heroes due to unbalanced issues.

Well, Summoners suck at level 60, because a Warrior can take down your army of daemons in a couple of seconds. I don't play dark elves, but if you can summon it instantly, then it is pretty good for a quick defense force (as you said). I don't know what you would use skeletons for, as they do pitiful damage, low health and low combat making them useless, unless your opponent spams archers.
